Temilade Openiyi was born in Lagos, Nigeria, on June 11, 1995. Her family moved to the United Kingdom shortly after she was born, to a Nigerian mother and a British-Nigerian father. When she was five years old, her parents divorced. Tems and her mother moved to Nigeria and lived in Ilupeju before moving to Lekki and then Ajah.

Her duet with Wizkid on the song “Essence” earned her the number-one spot on the BBC 1Xtra Airplay Chart in 2020. She also debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in her career.
Tems appeared on rapper Drake’s Certified Lover Boy album, which was announced on billboards in Lagos on September 2, 2021. Her song “Fountains,” which she co-wrote with Drake, was her second Billboard Hot 100 entry, debuting at number twenty-six.

Tems Arrest
Tems and fellow Nigerian artist Omah Lay were arrested in Uganda by the Ugandan Police Authority in December 2020 after a live performance at a show for violating COVID-19 lockdown safety laws. They were released two days later and the charges were dropped.
