Professional Football Career
Watford
Luke O’Nien started his football career playing for Watford Under-9 team. When he was 18 years old, he signed his first professional contract at Vicarage Road in July 2013. After signing his contract, he was called up by the first team to the pre-season friendly tour in Italy which he took advantage of and made made sure he impressed the staff during training.
During the 2013-2014 season he was an unused substitute wearing the number 32 for the team. His breakthrough came when he made his first debut as an 88th minute substitute in a 3-0 home win against Barnsley on 15 March 2014.
O’Nien then signed a one-month loan deal with Isthmian League Premier Division side Wealdstone on 27 March 2014. He played his first game for the club as a late substitute in a win over Billericay Town on 31 March 2014, while his first game with the starting 11 came after three days on 3 April 2014 in a 3–0 win over East Thurrock United.
He was also included in the final game of the season, with a 2–0 victory at home against Canvey Island. After his loan spell, O’Nien signed a new one-year deal with the Hornets, on 13 May 2014.
On August 2014, he returned to Wealdstone, making 35 appearances for the team and also scoring 5 times for them. O’Nien was released from the club on expiration of his loan after Watford promotion in 2015 to the premier league.
Wycombe Wanderers
After his release from Watford, he signed a one year contract with league two side Wycombe Wanderers on July 25, 2015. During the 2017-2018 season he was named community player of the season after the club won promotion to league one.
Sunderland
Luke O’Nien joined Sunderland on July 30, 2018. He scored his first goal for Sunderland in away win game which ended 2-0 against Shrewsbury Town in October 2018. He scored his second goal for the club on November 27, 2018 in a home win against rivals Barnsley. O’Nien won the award for Young Player of The Season, during the end of the 2018-2019 season .
