Jeon Jong-seo Biography
Jeon Jong-seo was born in Seoul, South Korea on July 5, 1994. She is the only child of her parents. When Jong-seo was a child she and her family relocated to Canada where she did her middle school.
She went to middle school in Canada before going back to Korea to complete Anyang Arts High School. She majored in film at Sejong University after graduating from high school. Later, she dropped out of school to focus more on her acting career.
Professional Career
In August 2017, Jeon Jong-seo attended her first audition for the mystery film “Burning” directed by Lee Chang-dong after joining a management agency.
Jeon, a rookie actor with no prior experience in the entertainment world, took first place in the competition and was cast in the lead role opposite renowned actors Yoo Ah-in and Steven Yeun.
Jeon initially passed up the opportunity to play Hae-mi in “Burning” because she believed she had no chance of landing the part. Three days had passed since she signed with her current talent agency before the audition. “When I saw her, she seemed to have this very childlike sense of innocence, but at the same time, she carried this sense of duality — as if something much bigger was on the other side of that innocence,” director Lee Chang-dong said about her audition.
In May 2018, Jeon attended the Cannes Film Festival, where “Burning” had its world premiere. The movie won critical acclaim from all quarters, competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, and became the first Korean movie to make it onto the 91st Academy Awards’ final nine-film shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film.
In recognition of her debut performance in the movie, Jeon won Best New Performer at the 2019 Asian Film Critics Association Awards and was chosen for inclusion in The Hollywood Reporter Critics’ “15 International Breakout Talents of 2018” feature.

Jeon appeared in The Call, her second movie, in 2020. She portrays Young-sook, a character who thinks the future telephone is her only chance to prevent herself from making risky decisions.
The following year, Jeon signed on with United Talent Agency to serve as her American representational agency under the name Rachel Jun. In the fantasy-adventure movie Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon, written and directed by Iranian-American Ana Lily Amirpour, she made her English-language film debut alongside Kate Hudson and Craig Robinson as the lead character Mona.
The Korean adaptation of the Spanish crime drama Money Heist, “Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area”, will feature Jeon as Tokyo in its first season. This series will premiere on Netflix on June 24, 2022.
